Most homeowners choosing kitchen cabinets end up weighing two routes: cabinets made to measure for your kitchen, or ready-made (modular, standard-size) cabinets assembled to fit. Neither is always better. This guide sets out the general differences so you can decide based on your kitchen and your priorities.
The main differences
| Custom-made | Ready-made / modular | |
|---|---|---|
| Fit | Built to your measured dimensions, so it can handle uneven walls, bulkheads and awkward corners. | Standard widths; gaps are usually filled with filler panels, which works best in regular spaces. |
| Layout and storage | Drawers, pull-outs, corner solutions and heights can be specified for how you cook. | Choose from the sizes and fittings in the range. |
| Materials and finishes | Wider choice of board, finish and colour, depending on the maker. | Limited to the range offered. |
| Lead time | Usually longer, because cabinets are measured, designed, produced and installed for your kitchen. | Often shorter if items are in stock. |
| Cost | Depends on size, materials and fittings; get a written quotation. | Often lower upfront for simple layouts, but extras and fillers can add up. Compare like for like. |
| Installation | Normally done by the maker's team after a site measurement. | May be assembled by you, a handyman or the seller; confirm who is responsible for the result. |
When custom tends to suit better
- Your kitchen has unusual dimensions, pillars, bulkheads or sloped walls.
- You want specific storage, such as tall pull-out larders or a particular appliance layout.
- You care about a continuous, built-in look to the ceiling.
When ready-made may be enough
- The kitchen is a regular rectangle with straight walls.
- You need cabinets quickly or are working to a tight, simple specification.
- You are comfortable with standard sizes and a limited colour range.
A simple checklist before you decide
- Measure your kitchen (see our measuring guide) and note the pillars, windows, pipes and appliances.
- Write down what you must store and how you cook, so drawers and shelves match real use.
- Ask for written quotations that list materials, fittings, installation and warranty, then compare them line by line. Our materials guide lists useful questions.
- Confirm lead time, who installs, and what happens if something does not fit.
